The German colonizers built a unique system of mechanized water driven blacksmith workshops on the river Bodva and its tributaries in the area of the town Medzev. The first of them came into being in 1371. In 1870 some 109 of them were still operating which meant the highest concentration of mechanical blacksmith workshops of this sort in the world. For example they produced more than 100 different types of hoes which were then exported throughout the world.
